Shed & Shop Foundation Options

This decision matters more than most first-time shed builders realize — and it's permanent once you've made it.

Gravel Base

Genuinely adequate for pure dry storage — no vehicles, no heavy equipment, no plans to insulate or condition the space. Lowest cost, but you can't embed conduit or drains, and it's a real limitation if you change your mind later.

Concrete Slab

Worth it if you'll park vehicles, run tools or a welder, want a level equipment floor, or plan to insulate. Lets you embed electrical conduit, floor drains, and thickened edges for post anchoring before the pour — the same pre-pour discipline as a full barndominium, just at shop scale.

Concrete Piers / Blocks

A middle option for lighter structures — supports the post-frame columns without a full slab. Doesn't give you the embedded-utility advantage of a full pour, but costs less than a complete slab.

What to Embed Before the Pour

Electrical Conduit — Even if you're not wiring the panel yet, running empty conduit under the slab for future circuits costs a few dollars now versus trenching concrete later.

Floor Drain — If you'll ever wash equipment, work with fluids, or want the option of a wash bay, the drain and its slope need to be planned into the slab design, not added after.

Thickened Edges for Equipment — A 4-post lift or heavy stationary equipment needs a thickened slab section or independent footing under it — this has to be engineered into the original pour, not retrofitted.

Future Living-Space Rough-Ins — Even if you're not converting the shop to living space now, spare plumbing stubs and conduit cost little to add during the original pour and preserve the option.

Shop Electrical: Don't Undersize the Panel

Welder, Compressor & Lift Loads — A standard 100-amp service is often undersized once you add a 240V welder, air compressor, and equipment lift. Calculate real shop loads before choosing a panel, not after.

EV Charging — If a vehicle charger is even a possibility down the road, pre-wire a dedicated 240V circuit now — retrofitting it after the walls are closed in costs far more.

Dedicated Circuits — Dust collection, lighting, and general outlets each deserve their own circuit — sharing one circuit across multiple shop tools is a common, avoidable mistake.
