A Generator Without a Transfer Switch Is a Liability, Not a Backup Plan
Plugging a portable generator directly into a wall outlet to "backfeed" your panel is dangerous and, in most of Canada, against electrical code — it can send power back out through your utility lines and electrocute a lineworker who thinks the line is dead, and it offers no protection against overloading your generator with more load than it can handle. A manual transfer switch is what makes portable-generator backup power both safe and legal.
How a Manual Transfer Switch Works
A transfer switch is installed next to your electrical panel and wired to a defined set of circuits — typically 6 to 10, covering the loads you'd actually want during an outage: well pump, furnace/boiler circulator, refrigerator, some lighting, and a shop outlet or two. When the power goes out, you plug your portable generator into an outdoor inlet box wired to the switch, then manually flip the selected circuits over to generator power. It physically disconnects those circuits from the utility line first, so backfeed to the grid is impossible.

Why This Matters More on a Barndominium
Rural power grids see more frequent and longer outages than urban ones — longer feeder lines, more exposure to trees and weather, lower restoration priority than dense population centres. And a barndominium's well pump is a hard dependency you don't have on municipal water: no power means no water pressure, full stop, unless it's on the transfer switch. What to Plan Before You Buy
- Size the switch to your realistic generator, not your dream generator. A 6-10 circuit switch rated for 7,500W only helps if you actually run a generator that size — match the switch capacity to what you'll realistically own and run.
- Prioritize circuits deliberately. Well pump and heating circulator pumps are usually the two most critical; work down from there based on what actually matters if the power's out for 2 days versus 2 hours.
- Plan the outdoor generator inlet location during rough-in, not after drywall — it's a straightforward addition before electrical is closed in, and a real retrofit headache after.
One Honest Limitation
A manual transfer switch requires you to be home and physically flip it — it's not an automatic standby system. If automatic failover matters to you (e.g., you're frequently away from the property), that's a different, more expensive category of equipment (a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch), not what's covered here.
